Welcome to the East African Community Headquarters, and particularly to this Press Conference called to update you on the upcoming Health and Scientific Conference & International Health Exhibition and Trade Fair to be held from 29th to 31st March 2017 in Bujumbura, Republic of Burundi.

Before I proceed with my statement, let me take this opportunity to introduce  my colleague here present: Dr. Jean de Dieu Ngirabega, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the East African Health Research Commission (EAHRC).

Ladies and Gentlement

The East African Health and Scientific conferences are convened by the EAC Secretariat and hosted on a rotational basis by the EAC Partner States through their respective National Ministries responsible for Health, EAC Affairs, and other relevant institutions and bodies, and in close collaboration with regional and international health-related NGOs, civil society organizations, individuals, and other stakeholders in the region.

The Health and Scientific Conference & International Health Exhibition and Trade Fair is contributing towards strengthening regional cooperation in health in line with Article 118 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community as well as relevant provisions of the EAC Common Market Protocol.

For the first time, this event is being organized by the East African Health Research Commission (EAHRC), an Institution of the East African Community that was operationalized in May 2015.

Organizing the East African Health and Scientific Conferences is under the mandate of the East African Health Research Commission which has knowledge management as one of its functions.

The Conference is expected to bring together more than 500 leading health sector players including Ministers of Health, Members of Parliament from the National Assemblies and EALA, Senior Government Officials, Researchers, Scientists, Practitioners, Donors and Development Partners.

As you may be aware, EAC has been organizing the East African Health and Scientific Conference and International Health Exhibition and Trade Fair since 2007. Since the first conference hosted by the Government of the Republic of Uganda in March 2007,  we have now organized 5 conferences of this kind respectively in the United Republic of Tanzania in March 2008,  the Republic of Kenya in March 2009, the Republic of Rwanda in March 2013, and the Republic of Uganda in March 2015. The conference is organized around themes of regional and universal interest which foster cooperation in the development and provision of quality healthcare.

The theme of the 6th Health and Scientific Conference & International Health Exhibition and Trade Fair is “Preparedness for and control of disease outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics, in the context of climate change, globalization, and gaps in health systems”.

The conference will allow sharing of information and discussion on various aspects of the main theme and through symposia. It will provide fora for in-depth discussion by experts on key areas and generate recommendations, and strategies for their implementation.

The conference will be preceded by the 14th Ordinary Meeting of the EAC Sectoral Council of Ministers of Health from 23rd to 28th March 2017 in Bujumbura, Burundi with the Session of Senior Officials (EAC Sectoral Committee on Health) taking place from 23rd to 25th March 2017; Session of the Coordinating Committee (Principal/Permanent Secretaries) on 27th March 2017, and the Ministerial Session (the EAC Sectoral Council on Health) on 28th March 2017.

I wish to reiterate the invitation that we sent you, through our press release of 2nd March 2017, to travel to Bujumbura to cover the event. I recall that you were requested to submit a scanned Official Permission letter from the Editors/Media Houses allowing you to travel to cover the event, a scanned copy of the press card; 2 recent passport size photographs, a copy of passport, and a list and type of equipment you will carry for accreditation purposes. Please submit all the required documents to media [at] eachq.org

I also invite you to visit www.eahealth.org for further details.

At this juncture, I will now be happy to take your questions and my colleagues here present will join me in answering some of them.
