2nd Regional Steering Committee Meeting on 7th EAHSC concludes in Dar

East African Health Research Commission, 11th March 2019: Bujumbura: The 2nd meeting of the Regional Steering Committee for the preparation of the 7th East African Health and Scientific Conference (EAHSC) concluded on Friday in Dar es salaam, with delegates commending the National Steering Committee of the Host Country (United Republic of Tanzania) for the good work done so far in preparation for the event.

The Regional Steering Committee that met on 7th to 8th March 2019 at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), reviewed progress and provided advice where necessary on the preparations.

The meeting also received updates from the Partner States in regard to the preparations and toured the venue of the Conference i.e. Julius Nyerere International Convention Center (JNICC).

Addressing delegates, Prof. Yunus Mgaya, the Director General of National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) noted that NIMR was playing the coordination role of the preparations for the 7th EAHSC at national level. He informed the meeting that so far, the National Steering Committee (NSC) had held eleven (11) meetings and the preparations were on course.

On his part, Prof. Eligius Lyamuya, the Chair of the 7th EAHSC, assured the meeting that all was set for the conference and that a pre-final scientific programme of the event was already available and requested advocacy at Partner State level for participation in the conference.

The Chair of the National Steering Committee, Prof. Muhammad Bakari Kambi, who is also the Chief Medical Officer in the Tanzania’s Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, welcomed the members to Dar es Salaam and noted that the EAHSC was in line with the Treaty establishing EAC as far as integration in the health sector is concerned.

He noted that the theme of the 7th EAHSC on Digital Health is giving the Partner States an opportunity to share learning and experiences.

At the same occassion, Prof. Gibson Kibiki, the Executive Secretary of the EAHRC disclosed that the Conference had now been set as a biennial event and that the entire event had been redesigned and the flow of the theme and subthemes with the symposia synthesized and divided into plenary, parallel and interactive sessions.

He said Poster session had now been replaced by a parallel interactive session using an ICT platform and the Symposia had been restructured to allow deep-dive discussions by experts in the respective fields.

A sub domain had been developed in www.eahealth.org to manage submission of abstracts, registration, and archiving documents related to the conference.

The Executive Secretary disclosed that several EAHRC initiatives will be launched during the 7th EAHSC that will include Digital REACH Strategic Plan, EA Web Portal, EASci, YEARS’ Forum, EAGLES’ forum, 6th EAHSC Report, and the book of abstracts on Digital Health in East Africa, among others.
