Preparations in high gear for the 2nd EAC Regional Science, Technology and Innovation hybrid Conference
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 12th August, 2021: The 2nd East African Community Regional Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Conference is set to be held from 20th to 22nd October, 2021 under the theme: “The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation in EAC Regional Integration and Socio-Economic Development in the phase of Covid-19 Pandemic.”
The objective of the 2nd EAC Regional STI Conference is to provide a platform for information sharing and networking among scientists, technologists, innovators and industrialists from a wide range of sectors including the academia, the industry, the public and the private sector.
The conference is geared towards providing a platform for the players in the STI and stakeholders in the EAC and beyond to share their experiences and results within the knowledge and technology generation, translation and transfer chain.
The event will be held in a hybrid format through virtual and face-to-face platforms. The East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO), an institution of the East African Community based in Kigali, Rwanda, is coordinating the three-day conference in partnership with a Regional Organizing Committee and a Regional Technical Committee.
EASTECO is organizing the 2nd STI Conference with support and in collaboration with stakeholders of STI in the region and globally, including the Inter-University Council of East Africa (IUCEA), the African Union Commission (AUC), Ministries responsible for STI, National Councils/Commissions of Science and Technology, among other stakeholders.
It is anticipated that the conference will: stimulate the establishment and strengthening of strategic alliances among stakeholders to promote the generation; dissemination and translation of research findings; building collaborations and networks; and harness partnerships among stakeholders in the region.
The 2021 edition ultimately envisions enhanced sharing of research findings, collaboration and linkages through conference presentations, a ministerial roundtable, exhibitions and publication for regional integration and socioeconomic development.
An Exhibition and Trade fair will also feature at the event where Academia, Public and Private organizations will interact as well as showcase their services or products. These include research institutions, STI and academic practitioners, industries, NGO's, CSO's, line Ministries, EAC Secretariat, international organizations among others.

Submission of papers
Submission of papers shall be in two stages:
- Submission of abstracts: Applicants are required to submit abstracts, which will be selected through peer review mechanism. Successful abstracts will be published in Pre-conference Book of Abstracts. Abstracts shall not exceed 300 words, and shall be in MS Word, New Times Roman, font size 12, with no more than 5 keywords. The Abstract should contain the following subheadings: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions and Recommendations. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 31st August 2021.
- Submission of full papers: Authors of successful abstracts shall be required to submit full conference papers on 24th September, 2021. Instructions on format of full papers shall be provided to successful applicants. The conference full papers shall be published in Conference Proceedings. In addition, authors will have an option of submitting their papers for publication in the East African Journal of Science, Technology and Innovation.
- All full paper submissions will be peer-reviewed and evaluated based on originality, technical and/or research depth, accuracy and relevance to conference theme and topics.

Eligibility
Participation in the conference is open and papers shall be accepted from researchers, industrialists and innovators from the academia, research institutions, and the private sector within East Africa and beyond.

About the EASTECO
The Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community explicitly provides for the Partner States to promote and support cooperation in the development and application of science and technology within the Community in Articles 5, 12 and 103. The 5th Extra-ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State held on 18th June 2007 established the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO) as an institution of the EAC, in response to the provisions of the Treaty.
The Protocol establishing EASTECO defines the overall objective of the Commission as to promote and coordinate the development, management and application of science and technology in Partner States to support regional integration and socio-economic development. Convening of Biennial STI Conference is one of the avenues of realizing the development of STI in the region. The conference brings together all 3 players in the STI system in the region and beyond to exchange information and create an effective network for collaboration that supports the translation of STI outputs into goods and services for the benefit of the Community.
The 1st EAC Regional STI Conference was organized by the regional forum for science, technology and innovation (STI Forum), which comprised the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO), the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA), the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NMI-AIST) and other Science, Technology and Innovation stakeholders in the East African Community and beyond. The conference was supported by African Development Bank (AfDB) funding, which ended in 2019.
