Thousands of young East Africans to participate at Africa's largest Youth Leadership Summit

…As H.E Jakaya Kikwete expected to grace the Summit

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 4th November, 2021: Over ten thousand youths from across East Africa will next week participate in the region’s largest youth summit, seeking to discuss issues pertinent to the regional development agenda including unemployment and access to economic resources.

The event dubbed the YouLead Summit, will be held on 8th to 12th November, 2021 at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) in Arusha and virtually. It is hosted by the EAC Secretariat and MS Training Centre for Development Cooperation (MS TCDC) in Arusha, Tanzania.

The YouLead Summit 2021, themed; The Future of Africa: Creating Jobs, Feeding, and Housing the World’s Youngest Continent is the East Africa’s largest and most diverse forum of young leaders across multiple sectors.

An exciting addition to this year’s summit is the Arusha Debates, a roundtable debate on the political and policy realities for an enabling policy climate for meaningful youth participation in governance. The Arusha Debates highlight pressing African issues that require regional, continental and global policy attention and financial investment.

The aim of the Summit and the Arusha Debates is to shine a light on the experience of the East African youth who not only have to contend with the present challenges within their respective countries and beyond, but are also faced with the uncertainty presented in having to forge a way to create an ideal future for themselves and for generations to come.

Former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E Jakaya Kikwete is expected to once again grace the 2021 edition of the Summit as well as the network of influential leaders he and his foundation bring.

Additionally, President Kikwete is expected to launch the inaugural Emerging Leaders Fellowship for Eastern Africa.

At the regional level, sessions will be held at the AICC in Arusha, Tanzania as the central command center, with delegates, speakers and mentors, forming a limited physical audience. The command centers model will be replicated in the six EAC capitals in each country’s context. The various national level summit center will be connected via a virtual platform.

In addition, key sessions will be telecast live on various radio, TV, and social media platforms of leading media partners in the region.

The vibrant forum will provide a platform for old and young, experienced and novice, to meet, interact and discuss development issues without prejudice.

Thematic areas to be discussed during the Summit will address re-inventing leadership for East African millennials; youth at the center of peacebuilding and conflict prevention; accelerating economic opportunities and decent work for youth; and young people mobilizing towards Goal 5 of Agenda 2030 (gender equity and women’s empowerment) and Aspiration 6 of Agenda 2063.

YouLead Summit 2021 will also feature the East African Youth Enterprise Award Ceremony, focused on recognising outstanding cross-border business ideas by young entrepreneurs. The Summit will also unveil the inaugural EAC YouLead Fellowship and formally launch the Youth Governance Architecture Study series.
