Rwanda to host the EACJ 3rd Annual Judicial Conference and Rotational Court Session

East African Court of Justice. Arusha, Tanzania 31st March ,2023 : The Judge President of the East African Court of Justice, Hon. Nestor Kayobera and the Deputy Registrar, Her Worship Ms. Christine Mutimura concluded a 2-day working visit in Kigali, Rwanda.

The aim of the visit was to offset preparations for the 3rd Annual East African Court of Justice Judicial Conference which is scheduled to take place from 30th October- 1st November, 2023 and the Annual Rotational November Court Session of the East African Court of Justice, which shall take place from 2nd to 31st November 2023 both events in Kigali, Rwanda. 

During the visit, the President of the Court Justice Nestor Kayobera held meetings with the Chief Justice Hon. Dr. Faustine Ntezilyayo, Minister of Justice and Attorney General Hon. Dr. Emmanuel Ugirashebuja and State Minister incharge of East African Community, Hon Prof. Nshuti Manasseh. He briefed them on the two key events of the Court including their objectives and expected benefits to the Region. 

In his remarks, the Chief Justice Hon. Dr Faustin Ntezilyayo commended the EACJ for choosing Rwanda to host the 3rd Annual EACJ Judicial Conference and the Annual Rotational November Sessions of the Court. He said that both will greatly contribute to enhancing the Rule of Law and access to Justice in the EAC.

On his part, Hon. Dr. Emmanuel Ugirashebuja, commended the Judge President for actualizing the Annual Rotational November Sessions of the Court, which have served to bring the Court closer to the people and enabled the Court successfully undertake its mandate as the Regional Court.

Prof Nshuti Manasseh, underscored the role of the EACJ as the Judicial arm of the Community in fast tracking the integration process. He noted that the Government of Rwanda is committed to having both activities successfully hosted in Kigali, Rwanda 

Judge President thanked the Government Officials for their warm reception and their commitment to ensuring that the two events are a success.

About the EACJ

The East African Court of Justice (EACJ or ‘the Court’), is one of the Organs of the East African Community established under Article 9 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community. The Court was established in November 2001, its  key mandate is to ensure the adherence to law in the interpretation and application of and compliance with the EAC Treaty.

Arusha is the temporary seat of the Court until the Summit determines its permanent seat. The Court’s sub-registries are located in the capitals of the following Partner States: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and United Republic of Tanzania.
