Kenya's Head of Public Service hails Aga Khan Development Network for critical support to EAC region in education and healthcare

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 15h March, 2025: The Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service in the Republic of Kenya, Mr. Felix Koskei, has applauded the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) for the transformative work it has carried out across East Africa and the rest of the world particularly in the education and healthcare sectors.

Mr. Koskei said that the enduring legacy of His Highness Prince Karim Al-Husseini Aga Khan – Aga Khan the IV is eternally immortalized in his visionary efforts to uplift and unite humanity, thereby fostering a world where compassion and progress go hand in hand.

Mr. Koskei said that the Aga Khan’s commitment to the betterment of society has left an indelible mark on countless lives, transcending borders and generations.

The Kenyan Head of Public Service was speaking at the East African Community (EAC) Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania on Friday when he officially opened the EAC Triage Clinic that is operated by the Aga Khan Health Centre in Arusha.

Mr. Koskei underscored the importance of the clinic in maintaining health and wellness of EAC staff who he said had the onerous task of serving the regional population of over 300 million.

He said that the EAC Secretariat and other Organs of the Community have been instrumental in breaking down barriers to trade, facilitating infrastructural connectivity, brokering electricity (power) pooling, enabling free movement of goods, services and people across national borders, in addition to facilitating mediation of conflicts to promoting dialogue and deepening partnerships for shared security.

“This clinic is a step towards a future where no member of staff has to suffer in silence in cases of mental health, where no one has to travel far for basic medical care, and where everyone feels seen, valued and supported,” said Mr. Koskei.

“To the staff of the EAC, this clinic is for you. It is a place where your wellness will be prioritised, where emergencies will be met with swift and professional response, and where your held will be safeguarded,” said Mr. Koskei, adding that the clinic will also support delegates and visitors to the EAC Headquarters.

Speaking at the event, the EAC Deputy Secretary General in charge of Infrastructure, Productive, Social and Political Sectors, Hon. Andrea Aguer Ariik Malueth, described health as a fundamental pillar of human development and productivity.

“This clinic is more than just a healthcare facility; it is a reflection of our values – compassion, service and commitment to excellence. By providing access to quality medical services, we are empowering our staff to give their best in serving the citizens of the East African region,” said Hon. Ariik.

“This initiative will ensure that our employees receive timely medical attention, preventive care and wellness programmes that will contribute to their overall wellbeing and productivity,” he added.

Hon. Ariik thanked the KfW, the German Development Bank, EAIDNSNET Programme and the Aga Khan, among other stakeholders for their role in making the clinic a reality.

Also present at the event were the Chairperson of the Council of Ministers and Kenya’s Minister of EAC Affairs, Hon. Beatrice Askul Moe, the EAC Secretary General, Hon. Veronica Nduva, Uganda’s Head of Public Service Lucy Nakyobe, Aga Khan Development Network Representative (East Africa), Amb. Amin Mawji, the CEO of the Aga Khan Health Services in Tanzania, Mr. Sisawo Konteh, Permanent Secretaries and Members of the Diplomatic Community.

Mr. Koskei and the dignitaries had earlier toured the EAC Headquarters including the East African Court of Justice, the EAC Regional Cargo Tracking System and the East African Legislative Assembly as part of efforts to better understand the integration process.
