EALA Committee on Regional Affairs and Conflict Resolution undertakes benchmarking visit to the African Union

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 27th April, 2022: Eighteen Members of the East African Legislative Assembly Committee on Regional Affairs and Conflict Resolution are currently in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for a five-day benchmarking visit to the African Union Commission (AUC). 

The overall objective of the 25th- 29th April, 2022 visit is to interact with AUC Stakeholders involved in Peace and Security, and Political Affairs as well as acquaint themselves with operationalization of the African Union’s peace, security and political programmes.

EAC Sectoral Council on Education, Science and Technology, Culture and Sports (SCESTCS) adopts roadmap for implementation of Kiswahili and French as Official Languages of the Community

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 26th April, 2022: The 17th Meeting of the Sectoral Council on Education, Science and Technology, Culture and Sports (SCESTCS) has just been concluded in Dar es Salaam Tanzania.

The Sectoral Council considered matters of Education and Training; Culture and Sports; East African Kiswahili Commission (EAKC); the Inter- University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) and the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO).

In her opening remarks, the Chairperson of the meeting, Dr. Sarah Ruto, the Chief Administrative Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Kenya, commended the Secretariat for the achievements so far made in the Sector.

Dr. Ruto said that Education, Science and Technology were key to the region’s development, adding that there was still much more to be done especially in skilling the youths with the required skills and competencies.

EAC appoints staff to various vacant positions

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 15th April, 2022: The East African Community has made appointments for staff to fill various vacant positions in its Organs and Institutions.

The EAC Council of Ministers during its 47th Extra-Ordinary Meeting held from 4th to 6th April, 2022, and chaired by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for EAC and Regional Development, Hon. Betty Maina, appointed 35 eligible candidates to various positions in the EAC Organs and Institutions. 

Among the high-profile appointments made by the Council at the EAC Organs are Mr. Alex Obatre as Clerk at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), Mr. John Mutega Njoroge as Deputy Clerk at EALA and Ms. Christine Mutimura-Wekesa as Deputy Registrar at the East African Court of Justice.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo formally joins EAC after signing of the Treaty of Accession to the Community

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 8th April, 2022: The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has formally joined the East African Community (EAC) after the signing of the Treaty of the Accession of the DRC into the EAC in Nairobi, Kenya. 

The Chairperson of the Summit of EAC Heads of State, H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta, signed the Treaty of Accession with the President of DRC, H.E. Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, at State House, Nairobi.

EAC commemorates 28 years of the Genocide Against the Tutsi

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, 7th April, 2022: The East African Community Secretariat in collaboration with the Tanzanian Local Authorities in Arusha, the Arusha and Moshi Rwandan Community and the Embassy of Rwanda in Tanzania commemorated 28 Years of Genocide Against Tutsi today at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania. 

The commemoration event themed “Remember-Unite-Renew” was preceded by a walk to remember and laying of wreaths at the Commemoration monument at the EAC gardens as a tribute to the more than one million innocent lives lost through the heinous extermination of Tutsis in Rwanda in 1994.

EAC to commemorate 28 years of the Genocide Against the Tutsi

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, 5th April, 2022: The East African Community Secretariat in collaboration with the Tanzanian Local Authorities in Arusha, the Arusha and Moshi Rwandan Community, the Embassy of Rwanda in Tanzania, the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), The Pan African Human Rights Court, the Religious Denominations based here in Arusha, the Representatives of Students from High Schools and Universities of the Arusha region and EAC staff will commemorate the 28th anniversary of  the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda on  7th April, 2022 at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.

47th Extra-Ordinary Meeting of the EAC Council of Ministers underway

East African Community Secretariat; Arusha, Tanzania; 4tht April, 2022 The 47th Extra-Ordinary Meeting of the EAC Council of Ministers is currently underway in Arusha, Tanzania via hybrid (physical and virtual) format.  

The meeting is being held through the sessions of Senior Officials, Permanent/Principal/Under Secretaries and the Ministerial session. Senior Officials and Permanent/Principal/Under Secretaries sessions are happening in concurrence from 4th 5th April, 2022; while the Ministerial session will be held on Wednesday 6th April, 2022.

Ministers endorse establishment of Regional Consultative Process on Migration

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 1st April, 2022: Ministers responsible for EAC Affairs, Labour/Home Affairs and Directorates of Immigration from the EAC Partner States have endorsed the establishment of the EAC Regional Consultative Process (EAC-RCP) on Migration in the region and recommended the same to the Sectoral Council of Ministers responsible for EAC Affairs and Planning for approval.  

The decision came during the 2nd Regional Conference on establishment of the EAC-RCP on Migration which took place in Nairobi, Kenya. The EAC-RCP will provide a platform for information-sharing and policy dialogue dedicated to deliberate specific migration issues in a comprehensive manner amongst the EAC Partner States.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo joins EAC as its 7th Member

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 29th March, 2022: The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has today joined the East African Community (EAC) becoming its 7th Partner State.

The Summit of EAC Heads of State at their 19th Ordinary Summit held on Tuesday, 29th March, 2022 admitted DRC following recommendation by the Council of Ministers.

The Chairperson of the Summit, H.E Uhuru Kenyatta, who is also Kenya’s President, informed the meeting that DRC had met all the set criteria for admission as provided for in the Treaty for the establishment of the EAC.

19th Extra-Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State set to take place on 29th March, 2022

East African Community, Arusha, Tanzania, 28th March, 2022: EAC Heads of State are set to convene for the 19th Extra-Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State, set to take place virtually, on Tuesday, 29th March 2022 from 11:00am EAC Time.

The Summit is expected to consider the report of the Council Of Ministers on the negotiations between the East African Community (EAC) and the Democratic Republic Of the Congo (DRC) on admission Of DRC into the EAC.
