Kenneth Bagamuhunda
Customs and Trade Expert
Kenneth Bagamuhunda has been a cornerstone in the advancement of regional integration within the East African Community (EAC). Serving as the Director General of Customs and Trade from 2017 to 2023, he spearheaded key initiatives to strengthen the EAC Customs Union and the Common Market. Before this role, he served as the EAC’s Director of Customs starting in 2004.
Bagamuhunda was instrumental in the transformation of the EAC into a Single Customs Territory, reducing the cost and time of cross-border trade significantly. His efforts focused on harmonizing customs laws and procedures across Partner States and advancing system interoperability to streamline operations. This reform enhanced regional trade efficiency and economic integration.
In addition to his leadership in trade facilitation, Bagamuhunda played a pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic by mobilizing resources for health initiatives across the region. He oversaw the deployment of mobile laboratories and the establishment of a regional electronic cargo and driver tracking system, demonstrating his versatility in addressing both health and economic challenges under EAC frameworks.
