The EAC-led Nairobi Process is a regional peace initiative aimed at resolving the conflict in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Launched in April 2022, it is based on principles of inclusivity, dialogue, ownership, regional leadership, and international support.

This process seeks to engage all stakeholders, including the DRC government, armed groups, civil society organizations, and the international community in finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict through dialogue and negotiation, with a focus on regional leadership from the East African Community (EAC).

THE NAIROBI PROCESS

The EAC-Led Nairobi Process aims at facilitating a peaceful resolution to the conflicts and instability in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through diplomatic and negotiation efforts. This initiative involves multiple stakeholders, including governments of the DRC and neighboring countries, as well as international organizations and partners.

OFFICE OF THE FACILITATOR

President (Rtd) of the Republic of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta was appointed by the EAC Heads of State as the Facilitator to champion peace and oversee the implementation of the Nairobi Process. The Facilitator is tasked to coordinate and lead a comprehensive peace process, involving political dialogue, military interventions, and ensure inclusivity in the inter-Congolese dialogue.

EAC REGIONAL FORCE

The East African Community Regional Force (EACRF) is a multinational force that was deployed to the Eastern DRC in November 2022 to restore peace and stability, working in collaboration with the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) to combat armed groups, protect civilians, and facilitate humanitarian support.

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 27th January, 2024: The East African Community (EAC) has reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability to the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

EAC Secretary General Hon. (Dr.) Peter Mathuki said that the lessons learned from the deployment of the EAC Regional Force (EACRF) presents opportunities for the Community to strengthen its role as the primary guarantor of peace and security in the region through the Institutionalisation of the EACRF’s achievements.
