Regional alliance key to advancing digital skills, research and innovaton in the East African Community

Arusha, Tanzania – 20th August, 2024: The Inter-University Council of East Africa (IUCEA), together with  the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO), supported by GIZ under the EAC Digital Skills for an Innovative Industry project (dSkills@EA) have successfully concluded a co-creation workshop on the establishment of an East African Digital Skills, AI Research and Innovation Alliance -  in Arusha, Tanzania, on 12th August, 2024, at the sidelines of the Regional Education Conference.

The conference was organized in response to the deliberations of the 19th meeting of the EAC Sectoral Council of Education, Science and Technology, Culture and Sports (SCESTCS) held on June 22, 2024, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where the council emphasized the need to engage stakeholders and Partner States in establishing a digital skills alliance.

Inaugural EAC Education Conference calls for joint regional efforts to transform the sector in the digital age

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 13th  August, 2024: The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Philip Mpango, has called for joint and concerted regional efforts to tackle challenges in the bloc’s education sector. H.E. Mpango made this call today during the opening ceremony of the Inaugural EAC Regional Education Conference held in Arusha, Tanzania.

The four-day conference, 12th - 15th August 2024, themed,Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century: Collective Action for Quality, Inclusive, and Life-long Learning in East Africa,focuses on improving education in the region.

H.E. Mpango urged EAC Partner States to enhance their education systems to meet the demands of the 21st century. He emphasized the need to embrace global education reforms that focus on flexibility and technology integration.

19th Sectoral Council on Education, Science and Technology currently underway in Dar es Salaam

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 19th June, 2024:  The 19th Meeting of the Sectoral Council on Education, Science and Technology, Culture and Sports (SCESTCS) is currently underway in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania.

The six-day meeting started with the Session of Senior Officials that started on Monday, 17th June and goes up to Wednesday 19th June, 2024. The Session of the Permanent/Principal/Under Secretaries or the Coordination Committee is set for Thursday, 20th June, 2024 and Friday 21st June, 2024 while the Ministerial session is scheduled for Saturday, 22nd  June, 2024

A Big Win for East Africa with the Inclusion of Open Science in the EAC STI Policy

The 3rd East African Community (EAC) Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Conference, held from 6 to 8 March, 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya, marked a significant milestone for the region with the launch of the East African Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Policy 2023-2033 and the East African Regional Intellectual Property (IP) Policy 2023-2033.

Setting this achievement apart, is the inclusion of Open Science principles and guidelines in the new policy framework. This marks a first for the region and Africa and is set to unlock the full potential of scientific research and drive sustainable development across East Africa.

Establish regional genetic store to preserve genetic materials for future generations

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 9th March, 2024: The 3rd East African Community (EAC) Regional Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Conference ended in Nairobi, Kenya on Friday with a resolution calling on Partner States and other stakeholders to recognise that genetic diversity has largely been lost, thus the need for genetic materials to be kept safely for future generations through the creation of a regional genetic store.

Bujumbura, Burundi, 8th September, 2023: The 12th Annual East African Higher Education Quality Assurance Forum (EAQAN) is currently underway in Bujumbura, Burundi under the theme: “Nurturing Emerging Trends in Higher Education through quality Assurance”.  

The Forum, which kicked off on 5th September, 2023, provides an opportunity to higher education professionals, experts and other stakeholders in East African Community to reflect on the place of quality assurance in nurturing emerging trends in higher education not only in the region, but the continent and beyond.

35 selected from EAC Partner States for IUCEA-Kyundong University South Korea Scholarship for academic year 2023/2024

Kampala, Uganda, 25th July 2023 - The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) is pleased to announce that thirty-five (35) scholarships have been awarded to applicants from the six (6) East African Community Partner States (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, United Republic of Tanzania & Uganda). 

The call for the 4th cohort attracted a total of 975 applications both in soft and hard copies. The applications originated from the 7 Partner States of the EAC. The applicants were subjected to a rigorous selection process involving pre-admission into the university and scholarship assessment. This was followed by oral interviews conducted virtually by Kyundong University South Korea.

IUCEA begins Phase II construction of multi-million-dollar headquarters funded by EAC Partner States

Kampala, 20thJuly, 2023:The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the second phase of its Headquarters in Kampala. The project worth over USD8.4 million is expected to be completed within 18 months.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony held at IUCEA Headquarters in Kampala, the Chief Guest, the 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community (EAC) Affairs, Republic of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, reiterated the commitment of EAC Partner States to support IUCEA to deliver its mandate including operationalisation of EAC Common Higher Education Area.

Kiswahili language critical for forging a sense of unity in East Africa

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 7th July, 2023: The Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, has underscored the importance of the Kiswahili language in forging a sense of East Africanness and unity on the journey towards an integrated East Africa.

Rt. Hon. Nabbanja said that the East African region was highly diverse ethnically and linguistically citing 56 tribes in Uganda, 42 in Kenya and more than 120 Tanzania, adding that Kiswahili would come in handy in forging a common sense of identity for all East Africans.
