The Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) in collaboration with Masai Mara University is pleased to invite calls for papers, posters and exhibitions on its one-day 13th Mara Day Scientific Conference on the theme “Flowing Forward Together: Conserving the Mara Basin Ecosystem for Sustainable Biodiversity & Climate Resilience”. The conference will be held in Maasai Mara University physically on 14th September 2024. The conference is open to all researchers, students and government officials in the East Africa Commission member states (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC Congo and Somalia) and International Researchers doing research in Mara Basin Ecosystem who wish to address issues related to the Lake Victoria Basin in an interdisciplinary approach. The symposium will focus on four main themes, but any other theme will be considered if relevant. For each theme, topics from the natural and social sciences are welcome.
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 24th November, 2023:The Summit of the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State is in agreement that increased investment in climate smart agriculture and renewable energy is the best approach to mitigate the impact of climate change, and improving access to and availability of food for their citizens.
The Heads of State further agreed that there was a need to improve rainwater harvesting to ensure increased availability of water for irrigation agriculture.
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 21st April, 2023:The East African Community (EAC) training workshop in climate finance access and mobilisation for EAC Partner States has concluded in Arusha.
The three-day workshop brought together the operating entities of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Financial Mechanism and accredited entities to equip experts from Ministries responsible for Environment, Finance and EAC Affairs in the EAC Partner States with the necessary knowledge and skills to mobilize and access climate finance.
The EAC Secretariat has collaborated with UNFCC on the implementation of the Needs Base Finance project developed as a response to the Conference of Parties Long-term Finance decisions. The Long-term Finance process is aimed at progressing the mobilization of resources originating from a wide variety of sources, public and private, bilateral and multilateral, including alternative sources in an effort to scale-up climate change finance.

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 17th December, 2021: In a strong countermove against environmental and economic threats, officials from the East African Community (EAC) Secretariat and six Partner States gathered from13th to 14th December, 2021 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to reaffirm new strategies involving cross-border cooperation.
The joint effort is in response to a landmark study of four iconic “natural capital” landscapes the countries share.
East African Community, Dodoma, Tanzania 2nd June, 2021: The EAC Deputy Secretary General in charge of Productive and Social Sectors, Hon. Christophe Bazivamo has called on Partner States to increase regional coordination in response to the increasing problems of the Ecosystems.
“We are all aware of the challenges the region is facing including those related to the management of natural resources and the environment”
He disclosed that in response to the increasing challenges to the management of ecosystems, Article 114 of the Treaty for the establishment of the East African Community, the EAC Partner States have amongst other things, agreed to adopt common policies and exchange of information on the development, conservation and management of natural resources.
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, 28th May, 2021: The East African Community will join the rest of the world to commemorate the World Environmental Day by organising the “EAC Regional Environmental Week” (EACREW) from 2nd – 4th June, 2021 in Dodoma, United Republic of Tanzania.
The objective of the EACREW is to increase public awareness on the need to sustainably manage and conserve the environment and natural resources in the region. The EACREW will also help to reach out to the intended beneficiaries of the regional policies, instruments and actions on environment and natural resources management.
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 10th February, 2020: East African Community Partner States have been directed to enforce relevant laws to effectively ban the manufacture and use of plastic carrier bags with immediate effect.
The 7th Meeting of the EAC Sectoral Council on Environment and Natural Resources Management which met in Dodoma, Tanzania further directed Partner States that have not completely banned the single use plastic and plastic carrier bags to do so urgently.
So far, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania have fully enforced the ban on the manufacture of single use plastic and plastic carrier bags.
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 4th February, 2020: The 7th Meeting of the EAC Sectoral Council on Environment and Natural Resources is currently underway in Dodoma, United Republic of Tanzania.
The objective of the five-day meeting is to review progress and provide policy guidance on the implementation of Environment and Natural Resource Management matters.
East African Community Headquarters, Kigali , Rwanda 13th November, 2019: The East African Community (EAC) and Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretariats have come up with position papers to guide negotiations of the Africa Group of Negotiators (AGN) for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) also known as Conference of Parties (COP25) set for 2-13 December 2019 in Madrid, Spain.
The Position papers were agreed upon during a two-day regional technical consultative workshop in Kigali on 8 – 9 November 2019. The Secretariats, both beneficiaries of the European Union’s ACP’s Global Climate Change Alliance Plus (GCCA+) grant, jointly organized the Pre-COP25 technical meeting to come up with regional position papers consolidated from national positions of their respective member countries for submission to the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) to guide Africa in the negotiations during COP25 sessions.
