East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 11th September, 2024:East African Community (EAC) Partner States Central Banks have been called upon to embrace technology as part of efforts to facilitate cross-border payments within the EAC Common Market.
Making the appeal, EAC Secretary General Hon. Veronica Nduva said some of the challenges behind the low uptake of the East African Payments System (EAPS) include limited capacity, lack of inter-operability, communication gaps between central bank’s and stakeholders, fear of online scams, protectionism by central banks and overlapping membership by Partner States to payment systems set up by various Regional Economic Communities.

Veronica Nduva, participated in the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing, China, achieving significant strides in the EAC’s partnership with the People’s Republic of China.
The forum provided a valuable opportunity for the EAC to strengthen its longstanding relationship with China, focusing on strategic areas that promise to drive regional development and economic growth.
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 22nd August, 2024: The East African Community (EAC) Deputy Secretary General in charge of Infrastructure, Productive, Social and Political Sectors, Hon. Andrea Aguer Ariik, has urged EAC Partner States to expedite the signing of the EAC Air Transport Market (Liberalisation) Regulations as part of efforts to enhance regional integration and stimulate economic growth in East Africa.
Hon. Ariik’s plea comes in the wake of concluded development of the Regulations for Liberalisation of the Air Transport Market in the EAC Region. The regulations are expected to be submitted to the 19th Meeting of EAC Sectoral Council on Transport, Communication and Meteorology (SC-TCM) for adoption.

In her keynote address during the EABC CEOs-EAC Secretary General Round Table held in Arusha, Tanzania, the EAC Secretary General, H.E. Nduva, urged the private sector to have a different drumbeat for intra-EAC trade to thrive under the clarion call of "Buy East African, Build East Africa."
Arusha, Tanzania – 20th August, 2024: The Inter-University Council of East Africa (IUCEA), together with the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO), supported by GIZ under the EAC Digital Skills for an Innovative Industry project (dSkills@EA) have successfully concluded a co-creation workshop on the establishment of an East African Digital Skills, AI Research and Innovation Alliance - in Arusha, Tanzania, on 12th August, 2024, at the sidelines of the Regional Education Conference.
The conference was organized in response to the deliberations of the 19th meeting of the EAC Sectoral Council of Education, Science and Technology, Culture and Sports (SCESTCS) held on June 22, 2024, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where the council emphasized the need to engage stakeholders and Partner States in establishing a digital skills alliance.
Nairobi, 14th August 2024: The Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) today hosted the East African Community (EAC) Secretary General Roundtable at the Nairobi Serena Hotel. This engagement between KEPSA and the EAC Secretariat is a pivotal mechanism for driving regional economic integration, improving the business climate, and ensuring that the private sector's voice is heard in the policymaking process.
It underscores the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in achieving a more integrated and prosperous East African region; ultimately, enhancing the ease of doing business and fostering Kenya’s competitiveness in the region and globally.
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 13th August, 2024: The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Philip Mpango, has called for joint and concerted regional efforts to tackle challenges in the bloc’s education sector. H.E. Mpango made this call today during the opening ceremony of the Inaugural EAC Regional Education Conference held in Arusha, Tanzania.
The four-day conference, 12th - 15th August 2024, themed,’Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century: Collective Action for Quality, Inclusive, and Life-long Learning in East Africa,’ focuses on improving education in the region.
H.E. Mpango urged EAC Partner States to enhance their education systems to meet the demands of the 21st century. He emphasized the need to embrace global education reforms that focus on flexibility and technology integration.
The Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) is excited to announce the final call for concept notes for innovative projects in the cashew, cocoa, maize, and livestock (cattle, sheep, goats) sectors. This initiative targets private sector entities passionate about enhancing resilience, competitiveness, and sustainability through direct supply linkages with off-takers.
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 6th August, 2024: The East African Community (EAC) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) have reaffirmed their commitment to partner in areas of mutual interest to both organisations including education, health, culture, sports, music and the arts.
Consequently, both the EAC and UNESCO have committed to negotiate and sign a new Memorandum of Understanding to replace the one that was signed by both organisations in 2006.
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 2nd August, 2024: The East African Community (EAC) One Network Area (ONA) has expanded with the entry of the Republic of Burundi effective 1st August, 2024.
In a communiqué to the public dated 29th July, 2024, the Burundi Telecommunications Regulation and Control Agency (ACRT) announced the entry into force from 1st August, 2024 of new tariffs for regional roaming in accordance with the directives of Decree No. 100/202 of 2nd October, 2023 on the accession of Burundi to the EAC ONA.
Burundi now joins Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania as Partner States that have implemented the ONA that effectively reduces the high cost of telecommunications in the region.
