East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 1st September, 2021: The Korean Ambassador to Tanzania, His Excellency Cho Tae-ick has affirmed the Republic of Korea’s commitment to supporting EAC regional integration initiatives during a meeting held with EAC Secretary General Dr. Peter Mathuki in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Wednesday, 1st September 2021.
During their discussions, Dr. Mathuki noted that the Republic of Korea is a strategic partner for the East African region and emphasized on the need to revitalize relations.
The Secretary General affirmed his commitment towards increasing uptake of Covid-19 vaccines, stating that all EAC Secretariat staff were currently being vaccinated. He also noted that the EAC Secretariat was taking measures towards mitigating the spread of the virus and has for the last week of August 2021 closed its offices for fumigation.
The two executives deliberated on priority areas of collaboration and partnership geared towards supporting the regional integration agenda.
Dr. Mathuki denoted the need to strengthen EAC’s efforts towards responding to Covid-19 and economic recovery, as well as e-commerce, digitalization, and capacity building.
“Peace is a critical component of sustainable development which enables a society to sustain a healthy business environment. Support towards this sector is critical, and there is need to identify underlying factors that will enable us to address direct and structural insecurity,” he said.
On his part, H.E Tae-ick congratulated Dr. Mathuki on his appointment and efforts in reviving relations among development partners since taking office.
The Ambassador also affirmed his Government’s commitment to supporting the African region. “The African region and Republic of Korea have a long-serving history. It is important that we establish areas of cooperation that are beneficial to East Africans,” he said.

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 30th August, 2021: A two-day East African Community (EAC) workshop aimed at enhancing the participation of women in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) opened on Monday.
Speaking during the opening session of the workshop, the EAC Deputy Secretary General in charge of the Productive and Social Sectors, Hon. Dr. Peter Mathuki, is urging EAC Partner States’ governments to invest in industrial parks and infrastructure to improve the competitiveness of the region and increase Intra-EAC trade.
Speaking during the opening session of the East Africa Trade and Industrialization Week (EATIW 2021), held at the Julius Nyerere Convention Centre, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Dr. Mathuki urged EAC Partner States’ governments to enhance industrial productivity and strengthen institutional frameworks and policies to accelerate economic growth in the region.
Kampala, Uganda, 28th August, 2021 – Eighteen lecturers from Technical Vocational Education and Training Institutes (RFTIs) in Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania have been awarded scholarships to pursue their postgraduate studies at top Universities in China.
The Lecturers were selected from 16 Regional Flagship TVET Institutes (RFTIs) supported by the World Bank, through East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP). The scholarships are part of the Project’s effort to improve the quality of TVET programmes in East Africa.
East African Community Secretariat, Arusha, Tanzania, 28th August, 2021: The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Representative to Tanzania, Mauritius and the EAC, Dr. Stephen Bainous Kargbo, on Friday paid a courtesy call on the EAC Secretary General, Hon. (Dr.) Peter Mathuki in Arusha, Tanzania.
Welcoming his guest, the Secretary General noted the import role UNIDO had played over the years in supporting the EAC’s industrialisation efforts.
“UNIDO’s contribution to the industrialization efforts in the region remain unsurpassed,” said Dr. Mathuki.
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 27th August, 2021:The Executive Secretary of the Centre on Small Arms in the Great Lakes Region, Horn of Africa and Bordering States (RECSA), Lt Gen Badreldin Elamin, on Thursday paid a courtesy call on the EAC Secretary General, Hon. (Dr.) Peter Mathuki at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.
The two officials discussed several issues touching on regional peace and security including the implementation of the Nairobi Protocol for the prevention, control and reduction of Small Arms and Light Weapons in the Great Lakes and the Horn of Africa.
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, 26th August 2021: The EAC Secretariat in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is implementing a project on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) that will strengthen the capacity of Partner States to prevent and address infectious diseases at hot spot areas in the region.
“We have secured EUR 1.5 million from the German Government for the project. The project aims at increasing awareness and enhancing health and hygiene protective behaviours and practices to prevent and respond to the spread of infectious diseases including COVID-19,” says EAC Deputy Secretary General in charge of Productive and Social Sectors Hon. Christophe Bazivamo.
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 26th August 2021: Extensive land borders, along with previous disease outbreaks, make the six-member East African Community (EAC) susceptible to communicable infections, including cholera, measles, rift valley fever, yellow fever, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever and e.coli infections.
However, thanks to a financial contribution of EUR 1.5 million from the German government, over one million people will be reached with health and hygiene promotion initiatives, in addition to 19 hand-washing facilities due to be installed in hot spot areas.
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, 23rd August 2021: COVID-19 most probably did not exist in the East African region before the first official cases were reported in March 2020, a study by the EAC Secretariat in collaboration with the East African Health Research Commission (EAHRC) indicates.
The study aimed at verifying if COVID-19 infections had already occurred in the region in 2019 and therefore way before the first cases in Africa were reported by WHO in February 2020. It retested frozen swab samples taken from patients who presented with Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) between 01st November 2019 and 29th February 2020.
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 23rd August, 2021: The East African Community Joint Sectoral Council on Inter-State Security and Foreign Policy Coordination has adopted a framework for establishing a Regional Youth Peace and Security Platform.
The Joint Sectoral Council further directed the EAC Secretariat and Partner States to operationalize the platform and develop a Peace and Security communication strategy to facilitate awareness creation on the existing Peace and Security structures and promote coordinated and meaningful participation of youths at all levels in implementing the platform.
