East African Community Competition Authority and Fair Competition Commission of Tanzania sign bilateral agreement

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 1st November, 2023: The East African Community Competition Authority (the EACCA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tanzania’s Fair Competition Commission (FCC) aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two authorities in the advancement of competition policy and law in the East African Community (EAC).  

The MoU signed in Arusha, Tanzania will also ensure that the implementation of EACCA and FCC mandates and activities enhance regional integration and facilitate cross-border trade.The MoU sets out modalities through which the two institutions will cooperate and coordinate their activities in regard to cross-border competition and consumer protection matters in the region.

Boost for Northern Corridor as AfDB approved US$1.4 million for feasibility study of the multinational Kenya-Uganda Expressway project

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 31st  October, 2023:  The African Development Bank (AfDB) through its New Partnership for Africa’s Development and Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility (NEPAD-IPPF) has approved US$1.4 million grant to EAC for the feasibility study of the Multinational Kenya/Uganda:  Kisumu-Kisian-Busitema-Busia Expressway Project. 

The Expressway project is part of the Northern Corridor that runs from Mombasa to Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda through the port of Mombasa. It is the main corridor that transports the bulk of cargo that lands at the Indian Ocean ports inland to the five landlocked EAC Partner Sates.

Workshop to validate EAC Food and Nutrition Security Bulletin underway in Kampala, Uganda

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 27th October, 2023: A two-day workshop to validate the Draft East African Community Food and Nutrition Security Bulletin is currently underway in Kampala, Uganda. 

In remarks read on his behalf by the Principal Agricultural Economist, Mr. Fahari Marwa, at the opening session of the workshop, EAC Secretary General Hon. (Dr.) Peter Mathuki, said that the draft regional FNS bulletin specifically gives updates on the regional food security and nutrition status through analysis of food types and availability together with people’s access to quality food supplies within Partner States during the review period.

EAC applauds Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo for visa free initiative

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 26th October, 2023: The East African Community (EAC) has applauded the decision by the Republic of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to waive visa fee requirements for citizens travelling across their borders.

The decision which was taken during the 8th Ordinary Session of the Joint Permanent Commission between the two Partner States in Kinshasa, DRC, on Saturday, 21st October, 2023 will significantly enhance trade which is the driving force behind the integration process.

Limited knowledge and lack of access to appropriate technologies inhibiting aflatoxin prevention and control in East Africa

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 24th October, 2023: Limited knowledge and information on aflatoxin by stakeholders along the value chain has been identified as one of the major factors inhibiting aflatoxin prevention and control within the East African Community.  

The inability by most farmers to easily access appropriate technologies for aflatoxin mitigation and inadequate private sector participation in aflatoxin management are also significant contributing factors to efforts to contain aflatoxin contamination in the region.  

Also singled out as contributing to the aflatoxin menace is insufficient baseline data on aflatoxin to enable mapping of aflatoxin “hot spot” areas in all the Partner States and porous borders that ease the flow of contaminated grains across the region.

East African Press Council launched in Arusha giving a voice to Media Regulatory Authorities

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 19th October, 2023: The East African Community Secretary (EAC) General, Hon. (Dr.) Peter Mathuki, today launched the East Africa Press Councils (EAPC), an umbrella body bringing together media regulatory authorities within the region.  

The main objective of the EAPC, which draws its membership from media and press councils in the EAC Partner States, is to promote and protect free, independent, professional and accountable media in East Africa.

EAC-EU develop joint roadmap to foster digital transformation in East Africa

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 5h October, 2023: The East African Community (EAC) and the European Union (EU) have today kicked off the 1st EU-EAC Regional Conference on Digital Transformation in the East African Community, in Arusha, Tanzania. Both sides committed and agreed to foster a human-centric digital transformation in East Africa to utilise digital technologies and innovations for regional integration. 

The two-day conference, facilitated by the Digital for Development (D4D) Hub, unites key stakeholders from the EAC region and European partners. This collaborative effort aims to assess the current state of digital transformation in the region and explore opportunities through a “Team Europe” initiative, which includes the EU and its Member States. The conference’s attendees include representatives from the EAC Secretariat and other EAC Institutions, ICT Ministries of EAC Partner States, the EU Delegation to Tanzania and the EAC, and EU Member States.

Listen to juniors and appreciate their roles, EAC leaders and top management urged

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 4th October, 2023: Leaders and top managers at the East African Community (EAC) Organs and Institutions have been called upon to endeavour to always listen to and understand the roles of staff working under them.

Making the call, EAC Secretary General Hon. (Dr.) Peter Mathuki said that it is through synergy and solidarity among staff of all cadres that the integration process will be moved forward as expected by EAC citizens.

Dr. Mathuki said that EAC, which is on a trajectory of expansion that has resulted in a bigger market for the business community, was poised to help the African Union (AU) attain its goal of an African Economic Community by the year 2063.
