Hon. Amanya Mushega
Former Secretary General, EAC

Hon. Nuwe Amanya Mushega, commonly known as Amanya Mushega, is a distinguished Ugandan statesman, lawyer, and seasoned public servant with an illustrious career that spans decades of impactful leadership. A stalwart in East African regional integration, Mushega played a pivotal role in the revival and consolidation of the East African Community (EAC), serving as its Secretary General from 2001 to 2006. During his tenure, he was instrumental in steering the Community through its foundational years following its re-establishment in 1999. His efforts significantly advanced the operationalization of key EAC protocols, laying a firm foundation for the region’s integration journey.

Before joining the EAC, Mushega held several high-ranking positions in Uganda’s government, including Minister for Education and Sports, where he championed educational reforms, and Minister for Regional Cooperation, where he honed his diplomatic and negotiation skills. His deep commitment to fostering unity and cooperation was reflected in his leadership style, marked by pragmatism, foresight, and a people-centered approach.

A lawyer by profession, Mushega is celebrated for his strategic thinking and dedication to the principles of shared prosperity and peace within East Africa. His enduring legacy in regional integration continues to inspire efforts toward a more cohesive and prosperous East African Community.
