10,000 young East Africans to gather for the 2020 Youth Leadership Summit

H.E Jakaya Kikwete expected to grace the Summit

Arusha. Tanzania, November 12, 2020: Ten thousand young people from across the six East African Community Partner States will next week gather at the EAC headquarters in Arusha and six capitals in the region to discuss issues pertinent to the regional development agenda.

The 23rd to 27th November, 2020 event dubbed the YouLead Summit, is East Africa’s flagship Youth Leadership Development Program seeking to unlock youth leadership potential for a prosperous region. It is hosted by the East African Community (EAC) and MS Training Centre for Development Cooperation (MS TCDC) in Arusha, Tanzania.

EAC receives credentials from British and Swiss Ambassadors

East African Community , Arusha , Tanzania, 10 th November, 2020:The East African Community Secretary General, Amb. Liberat Mfumukeko today received credentials from H.E David Concar, British High Commissioner to the United Republic of Tanzania, and H.E Didier Chassot, Swiss Ambassador to United Republic of Tanzania.

Speaking with the British High Commissioner, Amb.  Mfumukeko hailed the strong relations existing between the EAC and Britain and commended the British government for its dedicated support to the EAC integration process.

All set for 48th East African Revenue Authorities Commissioners General Assembly

East African Community, Arusha, Tanzania: November 9th, 2020: The 48th East African Revenue Authorities Commissioners General’s (EARACGs) meeting to discuss experiences and address challenges facing tax administrations in the region will be held virtually on 11th November, 2020.

The meeting themed Rethink, Restart and Reinvent: Our Road to Recovery”, will concentrate on lessons learnt by the EAC Partner States during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the innovative approaches that will shore up revenue in the region.

EALA virtual sitting currently underway

East African Legislative Assembly, Arusha, Tanzania: November 9th, 2020: EALA has commenced its First Meeting of the Fourth Session via virtual means.  The Session which got underway on Friday, November 6th, 2020, runs until November 26th, 2020.  

Key highlights of the plenary that is presided over by Speaker, Rt Hon Ngoga Karoli Martin, is a report of the Assembly assessing the implementation of the Common Market Protocol in relation to cross-border trade.  The report, whose tabling and debate is timely, looks at the implementation of the key integration pillar (Common Market Protocol) in the wake of the COVID 19 pandemic, which has greatly impacted on the EAC region, the continent and beyond.  The report follows a series of the assessment activities undertaken by the regional assembly in all six Partner States in May 2020.

EAC Election Observer Mission Flags Off to the 28th October General Elections in the United Republic of Tanzania

East African Community , Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 27th October, 2020: The former President of Burundi and Head of the Mission (HoM), H.E. Sylvester Ntibantunganya yesterday flagged off 59 members of the East African Community Election Observer Mission to various regions of the country ready for the 28th October, 2020 General Elections.

Addressing the Observers and the Media, at the flag off event in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the HoM commended the people of Tanzania for so far conducting themselves with maturity in one of the most vibrant election campaigns in the country’s history.

EAC and the French Government sign a Memorandum of Understanding

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, Friday, 23rd October, 2020: The East African Community and the French Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU was signed at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania by the EAC Secretary General Amb. Liberat Mfumukeko and the Ambassador of France to Tanzania accredited at EAC, H.E. Frédéric Clavier.

The objective of the MoU is to establish a framework of cooperation and facilitate the Parties’ strategic partnership to draw on expertise and support collaborative initiatives to sustain the EAC Integration Agenda. Highlighted in the five (5) year MoU are the key priority areas of cooperation that the two parties seek to explore. These include Energy, Climate Change and Biodiversity, Industry, Private Sector Development and Investment Promotion, Customs and Trade, Financial Sector, and Capacity Building and Project Development. For the purpose of concretizing cooperation in the earmarked sectors, the Government of France will mobilize different actors and instruments.

IOM Launches Continental Strategy on Migration for Africa 2020-2024

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 22nd October, 2020: The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has launched the first Continental Strategy on Migration for Africa for the period 2020-2024. The Strategy provides an excellent opportunity to further develop synergies for more robust migration dialogues and outcomes across regions and with all relevant partners.

The IOM’s Continental Strategy was conceived to reinforce commitment towards safe, orderly and regular migration within and outside the African continent. Through multi-stakeholder engagement, it is expected to give impetus for adaptive measures for better migration management and scale up the positive impacts, opportunities and benefits of migration for the whole of society.

EAC Launches 50 Million African Women Speak Networking Platform in Rwanda

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 15th October, 2020: As part of the International Rural Women’s Day celebration, on 15th October 2020; the Rwandan government in partnership with the East African Community launched the 50 Million African Women Speak Project Networking Platform in Musanze, Northern Rwanda.

The online platform is intended to support women empowerment initiatives by providing African Women Entrepreneurs with access to critical information on financial and non-financial services as well as provide opportunities for business networks among African Women Entrepreneurs.

EAC to deploy Election Observer Mission in the United Republic of Tanzania

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 16th October, 2020: The EAC Election Observer Mission is due for deployment in Tanzania, effective Friday 23rd October, 2020. The Mission will arrive in Dar es salaam on Friday 23rd October 2020 and will observe the General Elections slated for 28th October, 2020.

The deployment of EAC Election Observer Mission is a mandate under the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC and pursuant to the invitation of the National Electoral Commission of Tanzania (NEC), as well as the decision of the Council of Ministers on observation of elections in the EAC Partner States. The Mission’s mandate is to observe the overall electoral environment, pre-election activities, the polling day, the counting and tallying/announcement of results.
