EAC and EU set to align development priorities for 2021 - 2027

East African Community Secretariat, Arusha, Tanzania, 27th April, 2021: The EAC Secretary General, Hon. Dr. Peter Mathuki, has today undertaken his first assignment as the 6th Secretary General of the EAC in a virtual meeting with the European Union Commission. 

The meeting provided the platform to review what is envisaged in the EU Multiannual Indicative Programme (MIP) for Sub-Saharan Africa 2021-27, taking into account lessons learnt from ongoing actions as well as the current priorities of the EU Commission and Regional Economic Communities in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Russian Ambassador pays courtesy call on EAC Secretary General

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 27th April, 2021:The Ambassador -at-large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and Head of Secretariat of the Russia-Africa Partnership, H.E. Oleg Ozerov, yesterday paid a courtesy call on the EAC Secretary General, Hon. Dr. Peter Mathuki in Arusha Tanzania. 

While receiving the Russian Envoy, the Secretary General of the East African Community, hailed the existing cordial relations between the EAC and Russia. The Secretary General welcomed the support from the Russian Government geared towards enabling the Community to achieve its ambitious agenda.

Proposed EAC Political Confederation meant to strengthen integration process

East African Community Secretariat, Arusha, Tanzania, 26th April, 2021: The proposed East African Community Political Confederation is meant to strengthen and fast-track the integration process in East Africa. 

Justice Benjamin Odoki, the Chairperson of the Committee of Experts tasked with drafting a model constitution for the proposed Political Confederation further said that the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC was not self-sufficient thus the need for the confederation.

EAC bids farewell to Amb Liberat Mfumukeko

……..As the community gets a new Secretary General 

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 24th April, 2021: The East African Community Council of Ministers, Organs and Institutions and other stakeholders of the Community, on Friday bid farewell to the outgoing Secretary General, Amb. Liberat Mfumukeko at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania. 

Amb Mfumukeko assumed office as the 5th EAC Secretary General on 26th April, 2016 for a five-year, non-renewable term. His tenure as the EAC Secretary General ends on 25th April, 2021.

EAC Partner States to largely retain their national sovereignty under the proposed EAC Political Confederation

East African Community Secretariat, Arusha, Tanzania, 24th April, 2021: East African Community Partner States shall largely retain their national sovereignty under the proposed EAC Political Confederation, this is according to Justice Benjamin Odoki, the Chairperson of the Committee of Experts tasked with drafting a model constitution for the confederation. 

Justice Odoki further disclosed that the Political Confederation would ideally be vertical in that it would deal directly with Partner States rather than EAC citizens.

National Consultations for EAC Political Confederation kick off in Republic of Uganda

pol East African Community Secretariat, Arusha, Tanzania, 23rd April, 2021: The national consultations for the drafting of the EAC Political Confederation Constitution for the Republic of Uganda kicked off with sessions in Entebbe and the western ugandan town of Kabaale.

The 14-day consultations will see the team of constitutional experts for Drafting the EAC Political Federation Constitution hold consultations with civil society, local leaders, opinion leaders and the business community among other stakeholders to seek their views on what kind of a Political Confederation they would desire for the EAC.

Winners of the EAC I Deserve Short Film Competition for Youth unveiled

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 23rd April, 2021: The winners of the East African Community Secretariat regional youth short films competition held from January 2020 to April 2020 have been unveiled.

Unveiling the winners, EAC Secretary General Amb. Libérat Mfumukeko said that the short films competition has demonstrated clear aspirations from young people to live in a region that was peaceful, prosperous and integrated with priorities such as gender equity, climate action, cultural relations and infrastructure development.

“The competition also demonstrates young people from East Africa have strong talents, are creative and ready to participate in regional integration initiatives if they are given the opportunity,” said Amb. Mfumukeko.

The Secretariat received more than 535 short films by the close of the competition. Communications Officers from the EAC Partner States and film experts from the EAC region conducted the adjudication process for the EAC short films.

The adjudication process was conducted at both the national and regional levels.

The top three regional winners of the EAC Short Film Competition are:

  • Alex Burton     -     Kenya    -     Best film (Ranked 1st)

  • Aliyah Aziz      -      Tanzania    -    second best film

  • Jean Pierre Mazimpaka     -    Rwanda   -   third best film

The awards for the top three winners will be as follows:

  • USD 5,000 – 1st Winner
  • USD 3,000 - 2nd Winner
  • USD 2,000 – 3rd Winner

The award for each of the top six winners per country is US$500

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, 21th April, 2021: The 20th Ordinary Meeting of the EAC Sectoral Council of Ministers responsible for Health is currently underway via hybrid (physical and virtual) means. 

The five –day meeting kicked off with the Session of Senior Officials, which is expected to conclude today 21st April, 2021.This will be followed by the Coordination Committee, which consists of the Permanent/Principal Secretaries on 22nd April, 2021 while the Ministerial Session will take place on Friday 23rd April, 2021.

Kenya's Cabinest Secretary for EAC and Chair of Council calls on EACJ Judges to speedily resolve disputes

East African Court of Justice, Arusha, Tanzania, 17th April 2021: Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for East African Community and Regional Development, Hon. Adan Mohamed has called upon the Judges of the East African Court of Justice to speedily resolve disputes emanating from the implementation of the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC.

Hon. Mohammed, who is also the Chairperson of the Council of Ministers, further emphasized on the independence of the Court in in dealing with issues faced by the EAC Member States or individuals in disputes filed before the regional court.

Kenya's Acting Chief Justice opens five-days induction workshop for new EACJ Judges

East African Court of Justice, Arusha, Tanzania, 15th March, 2021: The Acting Chief Justice of Kenya, Lady Justice Philomena Mwilu, presided over the opening ceremony for the induction for the new judges of the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) that is being held in Nairobi, Kenya. 

The Chief Guest, who was represented by Justice Smokin Wanjala of the Supreme Court of Kenya, congratulated the newly appointed EACJ judges upon their appointment to serve in the Court.
